Board of Directors

Jonathan D. Waldern, Ph.D. Chairman & CTO


Founded the board in March, 2004. Dr. Waldern brings eighteen years of technical and management experience in the development of computing, displays and telecommunications products. Educated in the UK, he built his first company in the emerging 3D computer graphics and VR field, thereafter successfully completing an IPO on the LSE in 1994. After emigrating to Silicon Valley in 1999, he founded DigiLens Inc. to develop Switchable Bragg Grating nano-composite materials and applications for LED and Laser displays. Waldern graduated in engineering with first class honors and completed his Ph.D whilst working at the human computer interface research centre at Loughborough University of Technology (LUT), a centre of excellence for optics and holography in the UK. He is a named inventor/co-inventor on over 50 patents and filings and is the recipient of three independent national small business awards for innovation, quality manufacturing and business development. The SBG technology was awarded "Best New Optics Component" Gold Award by Photonics Spectra Magazine.

Robert A. Young, Ph.D. Independent Director


Joined the board in May, 2008. Dr. Young is currently a Partner at Darwin Ventures, a private equity firm focused on venture capital. Bob has served as a member of Tessera Inc. (NASDAQ TSRA) board of directors since 1991 and was chairman of the board from 1996 to 2002. Bob also served as chief executive officer for Indian Rock Technology, Inc., where from 2001 to 2008 he managed personal private equity investments in technology companies. From 1998 to 2001, he served as chief executive officer of Curl Corporation, an Internet infrastructure software company. From 1986 to 1997, Bob was a managing director at investment bank Dillon, Read & Co. Inc. Over an 18-year period prior to that, he held a number of management and executive positions in sales, marketing, development and general management at IBM Corporation. His last position at IBM was as president of IBM Instruments, Inc. He received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Delaware and a doctorate in physical chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Paul M. Russo, Ph.D Independent Director


Joined the board in April, 2008. Dr. Russo is Chairman & CEO of Geo Semiconductor, a company focused on high quality video and geometry image processing for displays. Prior to Geo Semi, Paul founded and led Genesis Microchip through a successful NASDAQ IPO in 1998. The company was later acquired by ST Micro in 2007. Prior to founding Genesis, he rose to General Manager of GE's Microelectronics Center (RTP, North Carolina), after leading, Microsystems Research at RCA's David Sarnoff Research Center (Princeton, New Jersey). Dr. Russo received his B. Eng. from McGill University and his MSc and Ph.D in EECS from UC Berkeley. He holds six U.S. patents, is a Fellow of the IEEE and has received numerous RCA and industry awards. He served as an outside director of ATI Technologies from 2001 through its acquisition by AMD in late 2006, as well as numerous private venture funded start-ups acquired by public entities (e.g., RocketChips - acquired by Xilinx, Atmos - acquired by Mosys). Dr. Russo is also a member of the Global Semiconductor Association (GSA) Emerging Company CEO Council and participates in its EDA subcommittee.
