Diffractive waveguide optics for next-generation AR devices
For the future, DigiLens technology roadmap is addressing sophisticated XR applications, including those intended for enterprise and consumer gaming, as sensors, software applications and demand matures. Access is provided through the licensing of our application reference designs and manufacturing process, enabled by our photopolymer and contact-copy printing machines. Licensees purchase photopolymer and printing equipment from Digilens and thereafter pay a volume-based royalty during manufacture.
Technology Partner Licensing Model
We’ve developed unique customizable reference designs for organizations. Although each design is different, here is our general licensing model:
- Potential licensees pay non-recurring engineering (NRE) expenses upfront to access our IP technology and reference designs
- We work with our partners to co-develop product applications and manufacturing processes
- Once the NRE is complete, our partners officially become licensed and can begin selling and manufacturing
- Licensees continue to purchase materials from us, and pay a royalty to DigiLens for every product sold
Our technology has a suite of advantages that go to the heart of the life-cycle cost
In addition to our compact planar form-factor, DigiLens’ waveguide based AR display designs can provide a suite of advantages that go to the heart of life-cycle cost.
First, component costs are reduced. The optical complexity can be contained the the various optical elements, reducing the component costs. Once the NRE costs associated with creating the masters and developing the process is complete, the replication costs should be relatively insignificant compared to the traditional recurring material costs associated with the components.
Second, assembly time is reduced. Since the part count is lowered, the assembly can be quicker. We’re developing a process where the cost-effective planar structures can be laminated together with high-precision. The touch labor is reduced compared to that of building an optical piece-part assembly to exacting standards. In addition to the precision of waveguide alignment, the holographic layers are more tolerant of minute variations.
Third, quality is higher. One of the biggest challenges in designing a new precision optical system is controlling the roll-up of tolerances on the piece parts, the mechanical housings and the final assembly process. With DigiLens’ holographic optical waveguide elements, “gold-standard” masters are produced and handed over to the manufacturer to replicate with the same high standard of quality. The net result can yield more devices.
